Angels Weeping for Christ
German Alpine region, 18th Century, possibly earlier.
18.5 inches tall.
Carved wood, with applied gesso, and then painted.
Condition is very good. No restauration, original condition. Wings are missing.
These two figures came from the estate of a university professor in Munich, Germany.
I was told that they were used in a crucifixion scene in a church, and they would be placed at the foot of the cross to weep for Christ.
Upon inspection of the rear, it can be seen from the old square hand forged nails, that these figures originally had wings which disappeared a very long time ago.
