German Alpine region, circa early 1700s.
24 inches tall.
Carved wood, then applied gesso, then painted.
Condition is excellent considering that this figure is around 300 years old. The toes on his left foot are missing, and the fingers on his left hand are missing/broken - - please see photos.
This is a figure of John the Apostle, the beloved one, the author of the book of Revelations in the Bible. From the way he is standing and looking, I think he is represented as looking up at the crucified Christ on the Cross at Calvary.
This is the first figure of John that I have been able to find.
