German, Alpine region.
Approximately 80 to 100 years old.
Carved wood, then gessoed, then painted.
Height is 36 inches to top of tree staff.
Condition is excellent. Minor paint abraisions here and there.
Other comments: This is a very powerful and well executed carving of Saint Christopher.
The carving shows Saint Christopher wading in water (crossing a stream), carrying the baby Jesus on his shoulder. His feet are shown in water.
The gold on his tunic is applied leaf, but I don't know if it is real gold or not.
This is an extraodinary work by a master carver. I have not seen a better carving of Saint Christopher and I doubt if a better one will come along. Don't miss out on this piece.
