DEVOTIONAL SUBJECT: Sagrada Corazon de Jesus, Sacred Heart of Jesus, or could be called El Divino Pastor, The Divine Shepard.
ORIGIN: Mexico
MATERIAL: Oil on Tin
APPROXIMATE SIZE: 5 by 7 inches, Frame is 8 by 10 inches.
AGE: c. 1850 to 1900
CONDITION: Very Good.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: A very rare, if not one of a kind display of the Sagrada Corazon painting because it shows a pelican in the front of Jesus that is picking its breast to draw blood. Since I have not seen this symbolism before, I asked a Priest in Guadalajara, Jalisco to explained to me what this meant. He told me that since peligans have been known to feed their young with blood picked from their breast, the Church uses this as symbolic of Jesus shedding his blood to save mankind. Also because Jesus is holding a lamb on his shoulder, this retablo could also be called the Divine Shepard. Don't miss out on this one. This is the first retablo I have seen with the pelican symbolism.
